The Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit refuted a false report circulating on social media regarding an Intelligence Bureau assessment of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The PIB clarified that the purported ‘Preliminary Assessment of West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026’ attributed to the Intelligence Bureau is fake and urged the public to verify news from official government sources to combat misinformation. The Election Commission is currently assessing complaints and representations from the second phase of polling in West Bengal to decide on repolling in identified booths, ensuring the electoral process’s integrity.
The Election Commission is actively considering requests for repolling in 77 booths across four Assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas district following the second phase of the West Bengal elections held on April 29. Security arrangements and polling data from the affected booths are under scrutiny as part of the post-poll review process to uphold the election’s fairness. The recently concluded second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 witnessed significant voter turnout, exceeding 92.6% in Phase 2 and totaling nearly 93% across both phases, marking a historic high since Independence.
With approximately 3.21 crore eligible voters in this phase, polling was conducted under stringent security measures amidst reports of isolated violence in certain areas. The outcome of this crucial election is poised to determine the continuity of the current administration or a potential change in government, with the counting scheduled for May 4.
