A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was submitted in the Calcutta High Court concerning the demise of a Dum Dum resident who got trapped in an elevator at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The petition alleges negligence and calls for a CBI probe into the incident. Chief Justice Sujoy Paul-led Division Bench has permitted the case filing, with a hearing scheduled for March 27.

Social activist Vijay Kumar Singhal lodged the PIL through legal representation before the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, including Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen. The petitioner accuses the hospital authorities of neglecting public safety in the healthcare sector. This negligence has led to tragic events like the elevator-related fatality at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Arup Banerjee, a Dum Dum resident, tragically lost his life after being trapped in an elevator at the hospital while seeking medical care for his three-year-old child. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, with the elevator malfunctioning and causing severe injuries to Arup. Despite his family’s pleas for help, no timely assistance was provided, leading to his unfortunate demise.

Three liftmen and two security guards were arrested by Tala Police in connection with the incident. Forensic officials have collected elevator samples, and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder is being investigated. RG Kar Hospital authorities have conducted meetings to address the situation.
