A massive plantation drive in Morbi district, Gujarat, has successfully transformed barren land near the Machhu Dam into a lush green cover. The project, known as ‘Namo Van’, involved planting one million saplings on 1,200 bighas of land owned by a Trust in 2025. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the forest cover on September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday.

Minister of State for Labour, Skill Development and Employment, Kantilal Amrutiya, spearheaded the initiative, expressing his commitment to environmental conservation and natural farming post his recovery from cancer. The plantation drive aimed to establish a significant environmental initiative in the region, utilizing around 4,500 bighas of land owned by the trust.

Amrutiya highlighted the meticulous planning involved in the project, with support from Sadbhavana Vruddhashram, right from the initial stages of the plantation campaign. The barren land was leveled, fertile soil was brought in, organic manure was added in large quantities, and fencing was installed around the entire area to facilitate the planting of one million saplings within a month.

Around 500 workers were engaged in the drive, planting between 25,000 and 30,000 saplings daily. After 37 days of dedicated effort, a total of 10 lakh trees were successfully planted. The minister ensured provisions for irrigation, fertiliser supply, and ongoing maintenance of the plantation, now overseen by Sadbhavana Vruddhashram.

The saplings planted eight months ago have flourished, transforming the once arid landscape into a thriving green expanse. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel revisited the site before local self-government elections, approving Rs three crore for the construction of a road to enhance visitor access to the forest area.

Amrutiya, who recently battled cancer, expressed his renewed commitment to environmental causes post-surgery and chemotherapy. He aims to raise awareness about natural farming and tree plantation, seeking government support for future plantation drives near the Machhu Dam.
