Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride as rare Chola-era copper plates were returned to India from the Netherlands. During his radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, he highlighted the significance of preserving India’s heritage and encouraged youth to explore astronomy. The artefacts, comprising 21 large and 3 small copper plates, primarily relate to King Rajendra Chola I and his father’s vow to donate a village to a Buddhist monastery.
The inscriptions on the copper plates shed light on the Chola dynasty’s achievements, emphasizing their maritime prowess and international relations. PM Modi underlined the government’s efforts to safeguard India’s historical legacy. He also mentioned the discovery of three ancient copper plates in Malhar, Chhattisgarh, offering insights into governance, religion, and culture during Maharishi Balarjun’s era.
PM Modi praised India’s historical interest in astronomy, noting its deep-rooted connection with the country’s civilization. He highlighted the popularity of astronomy clubs across India, encouraging the younger generation to engage in scientific exploration. The Prime Minister commended organizations like the Bangalore Astronomical Society and Astro Keralam for promoting astronomy and scientific learning, especially in rural areas.
