In his 130th ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Jagdish Prasad Ahirwar, a forest beat guard from Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district, for his dedication to preserving medicinal plants. Ahirwar’s initiative to document and protect the region’s medicinal flora has gained national acclaim, emphasizing the importance of grassroots conservation efforts.
Ahirwar, stationed in the Panna Tiger Reserve, identified a need to preserve the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants that was at risk of being lost. Motivated to safeguard this wisdom for future generations, he meticulously cataloged over 125 species of medicinal plants found in the jungle.
His comprehensive documentation includes photographs, local names, traditional uses, and precise locations of these plants, which offer a wide range of medicinal properties. The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department recognized the significance of Ahirwar’s work and compiled his findings into an official record, now published as a valuable resource for researchers and environmentalists studying biodiversity in central India’s forests.
PM Modi highlighted Ahirwar’s contribution as an example of grassroots environmental protection, mentioning the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign aimed at promoting tree planting and environmental awareness. The success of this campaign, with over 200 crore trees planted, reflects a growing public consciousness towards environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
