Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significant transformation of Indian Railways, showcasing new standards achieved through ongoing reforms and technological advancements. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw penned an article underscoring the decade-long evolution of the railway safety ecosystem, attributing it to clear policies, modern technology integration, and consistent financial support.
The Prime Minister’s Office shared insights stating that the Indian Railways sector has witnessed a substantial shift, evident in the establishment of fresh benchmarks through sustained reforms and technological innovations. The safety of passengers, for many of whom train travel is a necessity, is not merely a technical aspect but a crucial element of public trust within a vast transportation network.
During PM Modi’s initial term, a strong emphasis was placed on prioritizing safety within Indian Railways, leading to a technology-driven and well-funded overhaul of its safety framework. This strategic approach resulted in a remarkable decline in train accidents across the country, with the number decreasing from 135 in 2014-15 to 16 in 2025-26, marking an 89% reduction. Moreover, despite increased train operations and passenger traffic, the consequential accident index dropped significantly, indicating enhanced safety measures per kilometer traveled.
The data further reveals a substantial decrease in rail-related fatalities, with 292 lives lost in accidents during 2014-15 compared to only 16 casualties in 16 incidents during 2025-26. Recognizing the integral role of Indian Railways in the daily lives of millions, the minister emphasized the massive daily influx of over two crore passengers, encompassing a diverse range of individuals from commuters and students to migrant workers, families, and defense personnel.
