Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s unique approach to artificial intelligence (AI) at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi. The summit, attended by over 20 heads of state and 500 AI leaders from 100 countries, marked a significant milestone for the Global South. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri commended PM Modi’s leadership in shaping the discourse on AI governance.
Puri outlined PM Modi’s vision for AI governance, emphasizing ethical considerations, data sovereignty, and broad access to AI benefits. The Delhi Declaration, a key outcome of the summit, sets new standards for AI governance and emphasizes the importance of democratic oversight in deploying AI systems. The declaration focuses on global collaboration around the principles of people, planet, and progress.
The summit’s discussions also highlighted initiatives like BharatGen, which supports multiple Indian languages, recognizing the diversity of global users. Additionally, the proposal for a global compute bank, inspired by India’s affordable GPU access model, aims to democratize AI technology worldwide. The emphasis on data sovereignty aims to challenge the prevailing trend of AI extractivism in developing nations.
