Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated indoor cricket academies in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh from Gangtok, boosting sports infrastructure in the Northeast. The Manipur Cricket Association’s Indoor Cricket Academy, funded by the BCCI, was opened at Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium in Imphal. This facility includes three indoor practice pitches, a gymnasium, an administrative office, and a swimming pool.
Manipur Cricket Association secretary Lairenjam Geetranjan Singh hailed the event as a historic moment for cricket in the state. He expressed gratitude to Jay Shah for the support provided during his tenure as BCCI Secretary. The academy, a world-class facility, will be maintained and operated by the BCCI for the next two years. Singh emphasized that this indoor facility will greatly benefit players in Manipur, allowing year-round training without the need to travel outside the state.
The academy’s establishment is expected to enhance cricket in Manipur, which has seen success in BCCI domestic tournaments. Manipur reached the finals of five tournaments during the 2025 season and secured two Under-19 titles. Singh highlighted that all players representing Manipur are local talents nurtured by the association over the years. The new academy is anticipated to further strengthen cricket for both boys and girls in the state.
In addition to Manipur, PM Modi inaugurated the Indoor Cricket Academy in Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh. Developed jointly by the BCCI and the Arunachal Cricket Association, this facility features modern practice nets and fitness centers. The aim is to provide year-round training opportunities despite the region’s heavy monsoon conditions. During the virtual event, PM Modi emphasized that such infrastructure will support local talent, offer better training, and enhance the sports ecosystem in the Northeast.
