Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of sports in a special message at the commencement of the Khelo India Beach Games in Diu. The event, featuring over 2100 participants from across India, will run until January 10, with more than 1,100 athletes competing in eight different sports.
Organized by the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, the Khelo India Beach Games are being conducted under the supervision of the Sports Authority of India and national sports federations. The event includes sports like volleyball, soccer, sepak takraw, kabaddi, and more, with 32 gold medals up for grabs.
Prime Minister Modi praised the choice of Ghoghla Beach as the venue for the games, emphasizing the significance of hosting sports events in harmony with nature. He commended the organizers for promoting athletic achievements and environmental awareness through this platform.
The Khelo India Beach Games 2026 were officially opened by the Hon’ble Lt Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha. Sinha highlighted the success of Jammu and Kashmir athletes in the previous edition and expressed pride in the region’s performance in beach sports. He also acknowledged the developmental initiatives undertaken in Diu by the Union Territory Administration.
PM Modi reiterated the transformative impact of sports in India, emphasizing the country’s evolving sporting culture and the initiatives in place to support young athletes. He mentioned programs like Khelo India and the Target Olympics Podium Scheme that aim to prepare Indian athletes for global competitions and long-term success.
Competition at the Khelo India Beach Games began with Beach Soccer and Beach Kabaddi matches, witnessing strong performances from various teams. Defending champions and debutants showcased their skills in the initial matches, setting the tone for an exciting sporting event.
