Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bratislava marks a significant moment in India-Slovakia relations. This historic trip, the first by an Indian head of government since Slovakia’s independence in 1993, involved the signing of multiple agreements, including a crucial defense pact. Upon his arrival, PM Modi received full diplomatic honors, and President Peter Pellegrini conferred upon him the Order of the White Double Cross First Class, the highest civilian award in Slovakia, emphasizing the deepening friendship between the two nations.
This visit, confirmed as the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia, was described by MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George as “historic.” The talks between PM Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico covered various aspects of the relationship between the two countries. The day included the exchange of agreements and MoUs, a meeting with President Pellegrini, and a banquet in honor of PM Modi at the Presidential Palace.
The visit resulted in the elevation of the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, indicating a strategic shift in India’s engagement with Central Europe. Discussions went beyond trade, touching on significant geopolitical issues such as the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in West Asia. The recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement played a crucial role in boosting the momentum of the relationship between India and the EU, including Slovakia.
Tangible outcomes of the visit included the signing of agreements in various sectors, such as Defense Cooperation, Digital Technologies, Quantum Communication, and Labor Migration. Additionally, the establishment of the first-ever Chair in Artificial Intelligence by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations at the Technical University of Kosice was announced, highlighting the commitment to enhancing cultural ties between the two nations.
