Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with a delegation of Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from the tribal community at Parliament House on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. The session is set to run from July 20 to August 13 with 19 sittings. The government had urged political parties to ensure smooth functioning and expressed readiness to discuss important issues as per parliamentary rules.
The delegation, including state Tribal Development Minister Naresh Patel and other prominent tribal leaders, sought guidance from the Prime Minister during the interaction. The leaders described the meeting as “inspiring.” The day saw disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, leading to multiple adjournments before the Houses were eventually adjourned for the day.
During the Monsoon Session’s commencement, Speaker Om Birla paid tribute to former Members of Parliament and appealed for the House to function smoothly. However, opposition MPs protested, demanding discussions on various issues, resulting in continuous disruptions. The government introduced a Bill in the Lok Sabha to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges, but limited legislative work was accomplished amidst the disruptions.
Similar disruptions occurred in the Rajya Sabha, leading to multiple adjournments and the eventual suspension of proceedings for the day. The contentious atmosphere sets the tone for the rest of the session, indicating potential challenges in conducting legislative business effectively.
