Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar on his 100th birth anniversary, praising him as a mass leader known for his bravery, principles, and strong dedication to democratic values. Modi, on a social media platform, highlighted Chandra Shekhar’s legacy and urged a commitment to realizing his vision for a prosperous and just India. Chandra Shekhar, born in 1927 in Uttar Pradesh, was a key figure in Indian politics, serving as President of the Janata Party and advocating for social change.

Recalling personal interactions, PM Modi shared moments of exchanging ideas with Chandra Shekhar for the nation’s progress and encouraged Indian youth to explore his contributions to India. Chandra Shekhar, who started his political career with the Socialist movement, was known for his revolutionary spirit and close association with prominent socialist thinker Acharya Narendra Dev. His journey from a district party secretary to a national political figure reflected his commitment to championing the rights of the marginalized and advocating for social transformation.

Chandra Shekhar’s life was marked by significant events, including his arrest during the Emergency and his iconic padayatra from Kanyakumari to Delhi, covering over 4,200 kilometers. He established Bharat Yatra Centres across states to empower grassroots workers and promote development in underserved regions. Chandra Shekhar’s legacy continues to inspire a generation of leaders committed to democratic values and social progress.
