Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Mannathu Padmanabhan, a prominent social reformer and freedom fighter, on his birth anniversary. PM Modi praised Padmanabhan as a significant figure dedicated to serving society, emphasizing his values of dignity, equality, and social reform that continue to inspire India. Padmanabhan, also known as Mannam, founded the Nair Service Society in Kerala and championed social progress through education, organization, and moral reform.
Mannathu Padmanabhan, born in 1878, overcame financial challenges to become a teacher and later a lawyer, driven by his deep concern for social injustices. His establishment of the Nair Service Society in 1915 marked a pivotal moment in Kerala’s renaissance movement, focusing on educational advancement and community organization beyond sectional interests. Padmanabhan’s contributions extended to historic struggles, legislative roles, and educational infrastructure development, earning him national recognition and prestigious awards.
Padmanabhan’s legacy as a symbol of principled leadership, social reform, and institution-building in Kerala endures more than five decades after his passing in 1970. Notably, his presidency of the Travancore Devasom Board in 1949 reflects his enduring influence, despite the current controversies surrounding the board, such as the Sabarimala gold heist case and subsequent legal actions involving former presidents.
