In a video shared by PM Modi, he acknowledged Veer Savarkar’s contributions, describing him as a freedom fighter with unmatched sacrifice, courage, and determination. Savarkar’s multifaceted persona, blending reverence for both weaponry and knowledge, along with his role as a poet and social reformer promoting unity, left a lasting impact.
Recalling a visit to the Andaman jail where Savarkar endured his Kalapani sentence, PM Modi praised Savarkar’s unwavering spirit and defiance against subjugation. Modi expressed gratitude for Savarkar’s patriotic endeavors and his significant contributions to the nation.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, born on May 28, 1883, in Nashik, was a prominent freedom fighter, politician, lawyer, and writer, credited with popularizing the term “Hindutva.” His early involvement in the freedom movement, influenced by leaders like Lokmanya Tilak, shaped his revolutionary path towards advocating for Indian independence.
Savarkar’s active participation in revolutionary groups during his time in the UK, including India House and the Free India Society, underscored his commitment to the cause. His literary works, advocating for radical approaches to achieve complete Indian sovereignty, faced suppression by British authorities, exemplified by the ban on his book ‘The Indian War of Independence.’
