The Melbourne Renegades are scheduled to play against the Perth Scorchers at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, kicking off the 2026-27 Big Bash League season. This game will be historic as it is the first BBL match to be held outside Australia, with the Renegades designated as the home team. The decision to host the match in Chennai was supported by India and Australia as part of efforts to enhance bilateral relations.
In a move to strengthen ties between the two cricketing nations, the BBL will host its inaugural game in India, a first for any overseas domestic league. During his visit to the MCG, PM Modi engaged with young athletes participating in cricket, kabaddi, and Australian rules football exhibition matches, alongside renowned sports personalities like Steve Waugh and former Australian women’s cricketer Lisa Sthalekar. The occasion highlighted the deepening sporting relations between India and Australia.
The India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap was unveiled by the two Prime Ministers, focusing on enhancing cooperation in sports, youth initiatives, infrastructure, and talent development. PM Modi also commended Australia on their victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and emphasized the potential for collaboration in the upcoming decade, with India hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia set to welcome the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
