Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing during their meeting at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted Modi’s emphasis on lasting peace in Myanmar and the importance of inclusivity in the peace process. Misri mentioned that Modi stressed the need for unity among ethnic groups in Myanmar to achieve sustainable peace and democracy.
Misri pointed out that disengagement does not lead to positive outcomes but rather creates opportunities for others to intervene. He emphasized India’s commitment to engaging with Myanmar on democracy, peace, and inclusion issues. Misri underscored the significance of sustained dialogue and the detrimental effects of disengagement, which could be exploited by undemocratic forces.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi and President Hlaing met at the Hyderabad House and agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in various areas such as trade, investment, connectivity, development partnership, capacity building, security, and border management. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted the mutual commitment to strengthening the India-Myanmar partnership for peace, progress, and prosperity. Both leaders discussed deepening ties based on historical connections and people-to-people relations.
