Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit West Bengal with a busy itinerary from Saturday afternoon until Sunday. He will land at the Kalaikunda airbase of the Indian Air Force at 2.30 P.M. on Saturday and then proceed to Tarakeswar in Hooghly district by a special helicopter for a West Bengal government event marking the ‘West Bengal Foundation Day’. This day was chosen as the foundation day by the new BJP government in West Bengal.
The significance of June 20 as Bengal Foundation Day lies in its historical importance, as on this day in 1947, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee proposed the partition of the province in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The Prime Minister is also expected to unveil important projects for the state during his visit. Following the event at Tarakeswar, he will return to Kolkata for the night and participate in an International Yoga Day function at Red Road the next morning.
On Sunday, PM Modi will attend the Red Road event from 6.30 A.M. to 7.50 A.M. before moving to Garden Reach in the outskirts of Kolkata to inaugurate three Indian-built naval ships. Subsequently, he will head back to Kolkata Airport by helicopter and depart for Delhi on a special flight.
