Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude for the presence of European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at India’s Republic Day celebrations, highlighting the strengthening partnership between the two sides. Their visit is expected to enhance cooperation across various sectors, fostering deeper engagement between India and Europe. President Droupadi Murmu led the Republic Day celebrations by unfurling the national flag and overseeing traditional ceremonies, including a 21-gun salute.
Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen participated as Chief Guests in the historic celebrations, reviving a tradition after 40 years by arriving in a ‘Traditional Buggy’ as part of the ceremonial proceedings. They were escorted to Kartavya Path by the President’s Bodyguard, symbolizing the significance of the occasion. The European leaders will further represent the EU at the upcoming 16th EU-India summit hosted by PM Modi in New Delhi on January 27, aiming to strengthen collaboration in key policy areas such as trade, security, and defense.
The summit is anticipated to solidify the EU-India strategic partnership through the adoption of a joint comprehensive strategic agenda, focusing on prosperity, sustainability, technology, innovation, security, defense, connectivity, and global issues. Discussions will also encompass trade negotiations, security cooperation, and regional and global challenges, emphasizing the importance of a robust multilateral system and stability in various regions.
