Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent birthday wishes to Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, praising his dedication to good governance in the state. Yumnam Khemchand Singh, born on March 1, 1963, has been serving as the Chief Minister of Manipur since February 4, succeeding the President’s rule.
PM Modi, in a social media post, lauded Yumnam Khemchand Singh as an experienced leader driving prosperity and good governance in Manipur. Singh, a former sportsman and founder of the Assam Taekwondo Association, previously held the position of Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Having managed key portfolios like Municipal Administration, Housing Development, Rural Development, and Education during his ministerial tenure, Singh, a member of the Meitei community, has been actively involved in state politics. He represented the Singjamei constituency in Imphal West district as a BJP candidate in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh became a Cabinet Minister in the second N. Biren Singh-led ministry after the BJP’s victory in the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections. Recognized for his grassroots organizing skills and strong organizational background, Singh transitioned from a business career to politics.
A practitioner of Taekwondo since his youth, Singh recently achieved the prestigious 5th-Dan Black Belt in traditional Taekwondo from the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation in Seoul, South Korea. He has played a significant role in the development of Taekwondo in India’s Northeast and held positions in the Taekwondo Federation of India.
Considered a unifying figure, Yumnam Khemchand Singh is respected across party lines in Manipur amid political changes. His leadership is seen as crucial during this period of transition in the state.
