The Wagholi Police in Pune have successfully dismantled a significant MD (Mephedrone) drug network by apprehending eight individuals involved in distributing narcotics in the city and nearby rural areas. These accused were also allegedly planning to set up a drug manufacturing unit on the outskirts of the district. The operation led to the seizure of contraband and assets valued at nearly Rs 1.16 crore.
The case came to light on April 16 when two suspects were intercepted near the Jogeshwari Weighbridge on Theur Road in the Kesnand area. They were found in possession of MD drugs worth around Rs 1.1 lakh, leading to the registration of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against five individuals. Further investigation revealed a well-organized narcotics supply network operating in Pune city and its surrounding rural regions.
Sumit Ashok Ghule, identified as the alleged mastermind of the racket, was reportedly managing the drug supply chain with the help of his associates. The gang was distributing MD drugs not only in Pune city but also in rural areas like Lonikand, Bhima Koregaon, Shikrapur, Karegaon, Ranjangaon, and Shirur. Additionally, the accused were planning to establish a manufacturing unit for MD drugs in rural Pune.
Acting on intelligence inputs, the police arrested the main accused, Sumit Ghule, from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and subsequently apprehended several other individuals connected to the network. The operation resulted in the recovery of a substantial quantity of MD drugs, valued at approximately Rs 45.6 lakh in the illegal market. Luxury vehicles, including a BMW car, allegedly linked to the drug network, were also confiscated. With the arrest of the eight accused, the entire drug distribution network associated with the gang has been dismantled.
