Police in Pune have filed a case against the company managing the waste-to-energy project at Moshi garbage depot following a tragic incident where a large garbage mound collapsed onto a building, resulting in nine fatalities and multiple injuries. The case, lodged at MIDC Bhosari Police Station, targets the Project Head and Safety Officer of Antony Lara Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd. for their alleged involvement in the incident at the garbage depot complex in Moshi. Antony Lara Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd. had been contracted by the Pune Municipal Corporation to handle the city’s municipal waste and oversee operations at the site.
Officials have stated that the company was obligated under the contract to enforce all necessary safety protocols to ensure the stability of the Sanitary Landfill (SLF) and prevent potential hazards from waste accumulation. Additionally, the company was responsible for safeguarding workers at the site and protecting the Sanitary Landfill from damage during the monsoon season by implementing appropriate precautionary measures. The complaint alleges that the Project Head and Safety Officer were aware of the risks posed by inadequate safety measures but failed to take sufficient action to mitigate these risks.
The collapse occurred on July 8, around 1:30 p.m., when a section of the garbage mound collapsed onto a nearby building and road, resulting in the loss of nine lives and injuries to 12 others. Subsequently, a case was registered against the accused based on a complaint filed by the Municipal Corporation, citing various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation is ongoing to ascertain whether negligence in implementing mandatory safety measures played a role in the tragic incident.
