A police constable in Shopian district, Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday due to a firearm injury sustained while on duty. The constable, a resident of Noorpora village, was injured two days prior in an accidental incident. He was initially taken to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar from the Army’s Base Hospital in Badami Bagh Cantonment area after being shot in Shopian.
He suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen’s right side when a colleague accidentally discharged a firearm during duty. Despite being admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at SKIMS Soura for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accidental discharge.
In the past, incidents of injuries and deaths from accidental firing during duty have occurred in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have previously probed such accidents and emphasized the importance of caution in handling firearms during training and operations. The security forces, including J&K Police, are deployed for various operations, including maintaining law and order and combating terrorism and criminal activities.
