In a tragic incident in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, a police constable, Soumya Ranjan Swain, was beaten to death following a road accident and allegations of misconduct towards a girl. Swain, aged 32 and from Cuttack district, was a constable in the Government Railway Police branch of Odisha Police. Despite being previously suspended, he had been reinstated recently.
Reports indicate that Swain and his friend were involved in a collision with two girls on a scooter while on their way to Bhubaneswar. This led to a confrontation near a bridge, where local villagers intervened to assist the girls from a nearby village. The situation escalated, resulting in the brutal assault of Swain and his friend, who were later rescued by the police and taken to Capital hospital. Tragically, Swain succumbed to his injuries.
Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena revealed that the incident involved three parties: the girls on the scooter, the two youths in the vehicle, and the local villagers who intervened. The police are investigating the case, with one of the girls filing a complaint against the deceased for attempted assault. Legal actions are being pursued against those responsible for the lynching.
