Following a terrorist attack in Anantnag town, Jammu and Kashmir, where a local policeman was killed, authorities have conducted extensive raids across the Valley. More than 3,000 Over Ground Workers (OGWs) associated with terrorist groups have been apprehended. The security forces, in collaboration with J&K Police, have intensified search operations in various districts, including Anantnag, after the fatal attack.

The crackdown on OGWs extended to areas like Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama, Srinagar, Sopore, and Baramulla. The incident occurred when Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, on duty for Amarnath Yatra security, was fatally shot by a terrorist in Anantnag’s Lal Chowk. In response, security forces launched a massive manhunt and cordoned off Anantnag town to track down the assailant.

Expressing condemnation and condolences, J&K L-G Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah denounced the attack as cowardly. Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi visited the scene to assess the security situation. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the Anantnag terror strike, adding to the region’s history of such incidents.

The attack in Anantnag occurred amidst heightened security measures for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Notably, this incident is not the first in 2026, with previous anti-terror operations and encounters reported this year, including in districts like Shopian.
