The police conducted a raid at the home of Trinamool Congress councillor Mohammad Jasimuddin in Jorasanko, central Kolkata. Accompanied by Central forces, officers from the Jorasanko police station attempted to question the councillor while Central force personnel stood outside.
Reportedly, Jasimuddin did not open the door during the police visit, and the specific reason for the raid remains unclear, awaiting further details. Jasimuddin serves as a Trinamool councillor for ward number 39 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and faces multiple complaints in the area, particularly regarding real estate matters.
Officials arrived at Jasimuddin’s residence in the morning, aiming to interrogate him in connection with a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Despite the early visit at around 6 a.m., there was no response as the police continued to wait for entry.
Local residents, upon learning of the police presence, gathered near Jasimuddin’s house, some holding eggs, expressing discontent with the councillor’s alleged actions. This incident adds to a series of arrests involving Trinamool councillors in Kolkata, linked to charges such as extortion, corruption, and post-2021 election violence.
In a separate incident, Councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta was apprehended in Patuli on Saturday over extortion allegations. His detention prompted protests by local BJP members, chanting ‘Chor Chor’ (thief). Furthermore, on Sunday morning, another Kolkata councillor’s house was subjected to a police raid.
