The police have filed a case against Aparupa Poddar, a former Trinamool Congress MP, for allegedly obstructing officials while they were taking her husband, Shakir Ali, into custody. Shakir Ali, a Trinamool councillor, was arrested by the NIA in connection with the 2023 Ram Navami violence case. Aparupa is accused of misbehaving with government officials and interfering with their duties.

Following Shakir’s arrest, a confrontation ensued between Aparupa and a female police officer as the NIA and central forces were moving Shakir. Aparupa refused police protection, leading to a verbal exchange. The police have summoned her to the station for questioning. It remains unclear whether the allegations against Aparupa stem solely from this incident or other events during the NIA raid.

Aparupa’s husband, Shakir Ali, was implicated in the Ram Navami unrest three years ago, where violence erupted during a procession in Rishra. The situation escalated, resulting in injuries and property damage. The case was later transferred to the NIA, culminating in Shakir’s recent arrest. Aparupa remained composed during the incident, addressing the crowd and refraining from commenting on her husband’s arrest. She expressed faith in the judicial system but later appeared agitated.
