Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is witnessing a growing political clash between Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, leading to heightened terrorism risks in the region. Afridi’s focus on the Safe Cities project has drawn criticism from Kundi, who accuses him of neglecting security responsibilities and inciting violence through protests. This discord between federal and provincial authorities comes as terrorist attacks in the area are on the rise.
Sohail Afridi has been actively overseeing the implementation of the Safe Cities initiative, holding meetings in various districts and directing the installation of surveillance cameras at strategic locations. The project aims to bolster surveillance capabilities, enhance crime prevention, and strengthen police effectiveness through centralized command centers, positioning it as a crucial pillar for stability in the province.
Governor Kundi has criticized Afridi’s approach, labeling it as a diversion from the pressing security challenges faced by the region. Emphasizing the deteriorating law and order situation, Kundi highlighted the frequent targeting of law enforcement personnel and officials, citing recent incidents like an IED attack in Tank that claimed the lives of seven officers. He called for increased military operations, improved police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) capacities, and unity between federal and provincial bodies to combat the growing influence of Talibanization.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has joined the discourse, condemning Afridi for his comments on Afghan soil and accusing him of inadvertently supporting terrorist narratives. Tarar underscored the threat posed by groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and stressed the need for collaboration between different levels of government to stabilize Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The region has seen a surge in terrorist activities, with data indicating a significant rise in incidents and casualties, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the security challenges.
