A political controversy has emerged in West Bengal following statements made by former Calcutta High Court judge and current BJP Lok Sabha MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay hinting at the possibility of President’s Rule in the state. Gangopadhyay, representing the Tamluk constituency in East Midnapore district, claimed that an upcoming major scam would lead to widespread protests demanding President’s Rule due to a significant deterioration in law and order.

His remarks drew sharp criticism from the Trinamool Congress leadership, questioning the justification of advocating for President’s Rule by Gangopadhyay, given his roles as an MP and former judge. Trinamool Congress’ state General Secretary, Kunal Ghosh, urged Gangopadhyay to share any specific information about potential scams with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and suggested approaching the United Nations if he sought President’s Rule in West Bengal.

Gangopadhyay, known for his pivotal judgments enabling CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) probes in the cash-for-school job scandal in West Bengal, faced scrutiny for his stance. Notably, he resigned from the Calcutta High Court before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and successfully contested from the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency that year.
