Political leaders from various parties have differing opinions on the upcoming Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to be presented in the Rajya Sabha. Uttar Pradesh Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey emphasized the significance of ‘Vande Mataram’ in India’s history but cautioned against equating it with the National Anthem. On the other hand, Janata Dal (United) MLA Shyam Rajak supported the bill, highlighting the importance of both the National Song and the National Anthem in India’s freedom struggle and national identity.
Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) chief and MLC M. Kodandaram has urged the government to postpone the proposal and seek advice from scholars before proceeding with the legislation. Kodandaram emphasized the historical controversies surrounding ‘Vande Mataram’ and suggested consulting experts before making any hasty decisions. These reactions come as Union Home Minister Amit Shah plans to introduce the amendment bill during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The proposed amendment aims to extend the legal protection afforded to the National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana,’ to ‘Vande Mataram.’ If approved, intentionally insulting or obstructing the singing of the National Song could lead to imprisonment for up to three years, aligning ‘Vande Mataram’ with the legal safeguards for the National Anthem, National Flag, and Constitution.
