All political parties are currently prioritizing securing the support of the majority community, while the concerns of minority groups are being overlooked in today’s polarized political environment, as highlighted by Mohammad Adeeb, a former Parliamentarian. Adeeb emphasized that the primary focus of every political party is to prevent the Hindu voter base from shifting allegiance. He expressed concerns over the situation where minorities, particularly Muslims, feel compelled to vote for the Congress party due to a perceived lack of alternatives.
The former Member of Parliament raised alarm over the escalating divisive political narrative, noting that minority communities, especially Muslims, are increasingly marginalized and reduced to mere voting blocs by certain political entities. Adeeb’s remarks followed the recent state election outcomes, which he criticized for being influenced by divisive identity politics. He pointed out the unfortunate trend of religious rhetoric dominating election campaigns, such as the Tamil Nadu polls where TVK’s emergence amidst religious controversies was highlighted.
Adeeb highlighted the disillusionment of the Muslim community with various political parties and leaders, leading to a sense of betrayal and neglect. He attributed the rise of leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi not to their advocacy for minority rights, but to the growing disenchantment with the political establishment. While refraining from drawing direct comparisons to international scenarios, Adeeb cautioned against the potential deterioration of the situation for Indian Muslims if issues of discrimination and communal tensions persist unchecked.
Regarding the notion of a potential boycott of elections by the Muslim community, Adeeb dismissed it as impractical but advocated for toning down the communal rhetoric and fostering a more inclusive electoral atmosphere. He suggested that a consolidated opposition front, including the Congress and smaller allies, could pose a credible challenge to the ruling NDA coalition if internal differences are set aside in favor of unity.
