Amid the ongoing second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, a BJP polling agent, Mosharaf Mir, was brutally assaulted at Booth No. 53 in Chapra, Nadia district. Mir described the incident, stating that he was attacked by a group of people armed with bamboo sticks, rods, and firearms while on his way to the polling booth early in the morning. The assault left Mir and four ISF agents injured before the attackers fled the scene.
Reports of poll-related violence and clashes between supporters of different political parties have been emerging from various districts, with South 24 Parganas experiencing significant unrest. In the Saihati area of Bhangar Assembly constituency, tensions rose as Trinamool Congress workers protested against the presence of AISF legislator Md Nawsad Siddique at a polling booth. Central forces intervened to defuse the situation and maintain order.
In Basanti, the BJP candidate Vikas Sardar was attacked and his vehicle vandalized by alleged Trinamool Congress activists near booth number 76. Despite the presence of central forces, no immediate assistance was provided to Sardar during the attack. The incident has led to heightened tension in the area.
At Sasan in North 24 Parganas district, AISF supporters and villagers retaliated against Trinamool Congress activists who were reportedly intimidating voters. Similar confrontations occurred at booth number 147 of Ramchandrapur in Rajhati-1 panchayat of Khanakul Assembly seat, leading to clashes between AISF and Trinamool Congress supporters.
In Howrah district, voters expressed agitation after EVM malfunctions at a polling station in Bali Assembly constituency. Central forces resorted to a lathi-charge to control the situation, resulting in injuries to Congress party and Trinamool’s polling agents. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.
