Former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has criticized Hockey India for not extending his contract as the ex-coach of the national junior men’s team. Sreejesh expressed disappointment over being offered a role as the goalkeeper coach of the U-21 squad, considering it a demotion. He questioned the structure and existence of the development team, highlighting the lack of clarity on player selection, program structure, camps, and tournaments.
Sreejesh raised concerns about Hockey India’s preference for foreign coaches over Indian talent. He pointed out the significant presence of foreign coaches across various teams and roles within the organization. The goalkeeper, a two-time Olympic bronze medallist, also questioned the decision to label him as “inexperienced” for coaching, despite his achievements and experience in the sport.
In response to Sreejesh’s social media post, Hockey India clarified that his contract had ended in December 2025 and that he was not sacked. The organization announced Frederic Soyez as the new coach for the junior men’s team, following the conclusion of Sreejesh’s term. Sreejesh’s criticism sheds light on the complexities and challenges faced by Indian coaches in the national hockey setup.
