The death of Pravas Mondal, the first of the four accused in the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, has sparked varied reactions from political parties in the state. Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra criticized the encounter on social media, calling it a move towards lawlessness in Bengal.
In contrast, Trinamool Congress legislator Siuli Saha supported the encounter, stating that legal encounters are permissible if a criminal attacks the police while trying to escape. She emphasized the importance of state control over such actions. Bharatiya Janata Party’s Samik Bhattacharya commended the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminals, highlighting that no one would be spared under the law.
Meanwhile, the state Congress president, Suvankar Sarkar, called for a thorough investigation into the incident, advocating for justice through a fair trial to ensure the guilty are punished. Pravas Mondal was taken to the crime scene for reconstruction when he allegedly grabbed a police rifle, leading to a confrontation with the authorities that resulted in his death.
