Preparations for Census-2027 in Gujarat have been stepped up, with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) mobilizing 12,000 enumerators and 2,000 supervisors for the house listing and housing enumeration starting on June 1. The first phase of Census-2027, focusing on house listing and housing enumeration, will span from June 1 to 30, aligning with the state government’s directive from May 5. This initiative is part of a nationwide program initiated by the central government, with population enumeration set for 2027 in two phases.
Approximately 7,500 personnel have already undergone training, with the rest expected to finish training by May 21. Training sessions are being held in schools and community halls across all 48 wards of Ahmedabad, with staff assigned to wards under municipal corporation officers’ supervision. Enumerators have been sourced from central and state government departments, semi-government offices, and educational institutions, following official appointment orders.
In a preparatory move, citizens will be able to participate through a self-enumeration portal, open from May 17 to 31 for Gujarat residents. This portal allows households to provide housing and amenities details before door-to-door enumeration commences. Census-2027 will leverage digital tools, including mobile apps for enumerators and an online self-enumeration system for citizens, transitioning to fully digital data collection.
During the house listing phase, data on housing conditions, household amenities, and assets will be gathered. The AMC has cautioned that employees failing to attend training or fulfill census duties may face disciplinary action under Section 11 of the Census Act, 1948, potentially leading to criminal proceedings. Authorities emphasize citizen cooperation with enumerators for accurate and complete information submission during self-enumeration and door-to-door data collection phases.
