President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Sikkim Police with the prestigious ‘President of India’s Police Colour’ in Gangtok. This recognition highlights the Sikkim Police’s significant role in maintaining peace and harmony in the state, characterized by their professionalism and friendly demeanor towards the public, earning admiration and respect from citizens.
President Murmu commended all current and former officers and police personnel of the Sikkim Police for this achievement. She expressed satisfaction that the force, established in 1897, has been dedicated to ensuring peace, security, and justice in Sikkim.
India’s policing system bears the legacy of colonial rule, where the focus was on control rather than service to the public. President Murmu pointed out that this colonial mindset persists within the police force, leading to an authoritative rather than collaborative approach towards the public.
She highlighted the importance of transforming this colonial outlook in policing to empower citizens fully. President Murmu stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and a citizen-friendly police system that allows people to voice their concerns without fear.
Emphasizing a shift towards a more compassionate and supportive role, she urged police personnel to become partners and mentors to the public. President Murmu emphasized that the goal of law enforcement should not only be about catching criminals but also about fostering a safe and socially aware society.
