President Droupadi Murmu’s upcoming visit to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania signifies India’s deepening engagement with Central and Eastern Europe, as highlighted by Sibi George, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This visit underscores India’s commitment to enhancing partnerships with these nations, aligning with its broader European engagement and strategic ties with the European Union. These countries, strategically positioned at the crossroads of major transport routes, possess the potential to significantly impact regional trade and energy due to their well-connected infrastructure.
Secretary George emphasized that Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania’s geographical advantage as transport corridors through the Balkans offers access to broader European markets. He noted the interest of these nations in fostering closer ties with India, positioning themselves as gateways for Indian businesses to Western Balkans and Europe. The visit is expected to facilitate the strengthening of economic relations between both sides, particularly in the areas of trade, technology, and tourism.
Highlighting the historical significance of this three-nation visit, Secretary George mentioned that it marks the first-ever bilateral visits by an Indian President to Moldova and North Macedonia. Additionally, President Murmu’s visit to Romania will be the first State Visit by an Indian President in over three decades, with the last such visit occurring in 1994.
