President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the significance of voting, stating that it is not just a political act but a reflection of citizens’ trust in the democratic election process. Speaking at the 16th National Voters’ Day event in the capital, she praised public engagement for shaping democracy at the grassroots level and commended the Election Commission for its efforts to boost voter turnout. The President acknowledged the Commission’s initiatives to promote “full voter participation” and enhance voter awareness.
The theme for this year’s event, ‘My India, My Vote: Indian Citizen at the heart of Indian Democracy,’ was lauded by President Murmu as a reflection of the democratic spirit and the crucial role of voting rights in the Indian democratic system. She emphasized that the strength of democracy lies not only in the number of voters but also in the depth of democratic values. President Murmu drew inspiration from elderly and differently-abled voters in remote areas, highlighting their contribution as examples of increased awareness and participation in elections.
Encouraging all adult citizens to fulfill their constitutional duty by voting, President Murmu expressed confidence that voters, guided by their conscience and free from external influences, would fortify the electoral process. She applauded the youth voters as the future architects of India and urged them to exercise their voting rights responsibly to contribute to the nation’s progress. National Voters’ Day, commemorated annually on January 25 to mark the Election Commission of India’s foundation day, aims to underscore the pivotal role of voters, enhance electoral awareness, and encourage citizen participation in the democratic process.
