President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the significance of water conservation and community involvement at the ‘Jal Mahotsav 2026’ event in New Delhi. She stressed that water in India is intricately linked to culture, traditions, and livelihoods, not just a basic necessity. The President acknowledged the challenges faced by villagers, particularly women and children, who had to travel long distances for drinking water.
The President mentioned that clean water is crucial for health, time, and dignity, beyond mere convenience. She pointed out the Jal Jeevan Mission initiated by the government to provide safe drinking water to rural households through tap connections. President Murmu noted the mission’s success in enhancing access to clean water in villages, transforming the lives of many who previously struggled to obtain drinking water.
President Murmu underlined the importance of collective responsibility in natural resource conservation, emphasizing the role of both the government and society. She highlighted the significance of community participation in managing and preserving water resources. The President expressed optimism in initiatives like ‘Jal Arpan Diwas’, which aims to enhance community ownership and improve water resource management at the grassroots level.
President Murmu commended the contribution of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in supporting water-related projects, mentioning their involvement in water testing and maintenance activities. She emphasized the positive impact of SHGs in empowering women and society through water-related initiatives. The President emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to bolster water security, including promoting greywater management and groundwater recharge in rural areas.
President Murmu also mentioned national campaigns like “Catch the Rain” and “Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari” that promote rainwater harvesting and community engagement in water conservation. She highlighted the critical role of these coordinated efforts in ensuring water security for the nation. The President stressed that water conservation is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to value water as a precious resource for future generations.
