President Droupadi Murmu is set to lead a yoga session at the iconic Garrison Ground in Jabalpur on Sunday to commemorate International Yoga Day. This marks the first time a sitting President of India will participate in a yoga event at this renowned venue, adding a significant chapter to its history. President Murmu, currently on an official visit to Madhya Pradesh, will conduct the yoga session at Garrison Ground before visiting Kuno National Park in Sheopur district the next day.
The Garrison Ground, situated in the Sadar area, was named after the British-era military cantonment and has a rich history dating back to colonial times. Established in 1953 post-independence, it has transformed into a prominent sports venue in Jabalpur, hosting various sporting events like cricket, football, hockey, and athletics. Over the years, it has been a nurturing ground for local athletic talents and has witnessed the participation of renowned players from Madhya Pradesh.
Apart from its sporting significance, the Garrison Ground holds socio-political importance, having hosted major public rallies addressed by prominent figures like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This event follows a tradition of high-profile visits, with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar participating in Yoga Day celebrations at the same venue in 2023. President Murmu’s presence on International Yoga Day 2026 is expected to inspire numerous yoga enthusiasts and emphasize the benefits of yoga for overall well-being.
Local authorities, yoga organizations, and residents are gearing up for the event to ensure its smooth execution and create a memorable celebration. President Murmu will spend the night at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district after the yoga session, where she will review the cheetah enclosures and assess the progress of Project Cheetah. She will also embark on a cheetah safari within the park on June 22, engaging with the ‘Cheetah Mitras’ and the local monitoring team.
