Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing, addressed the issue of Indian insurgent groups operating near the Myanmar-India border. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed Myanmar’s commitment to tackling these concerns and ensuring that such groups do not pose a threat to India’s security.
Misri also highlighted Myanmar’s efforts to resolve internal conflicts between the military and ethnic armed groups by promoting dialogue and seeking a national consensus. He emphasized the importance of regional stability in Myanmar, stating that developments in the country impact not only India’s security and connectivity interests but also the cohesion of ASEAN, of which Myanmar is a key member.
The discussions underscored the significance of peace and stability in Myanmar for India’s northeastern security, border regions, and connectivity to Southeast Asia. The assurance of Myanmar’s cooperation in addressing security challenges was a key outcome of the bilateral meeting.
