Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the redeveloped Barmer Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station, one of western Rajasthan’s oldest, has a history of nearly 125 years. Barmer Railway Station has witnessed significant events like colonial-era rail expansion, India-Pakistan wars, and the transition from metre gauge to broad gauge.
With a legacy dating back to 1899, the Barmer Railway Station played a crucial role in connecting western India. Trains from Barmer once linked with Karachi through a cross-border route until the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Despite facing aerial attacks during wars, the station continued its operations, showcasing resilience and historical significance.
The station’s architecture evolved over the years, from a simple tin-roofed structure to a heritage-style building with a distinctive rounded roof. Major transformations occurred in 2005–2006 when the Jodhpur–Munabao metre-gauge line was converted to broad gauge, improving regional rail connectivity. The recent redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has further enhanced passenger facilities and the station’s overall appearance.
