Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Meghalaya’s unique living root bridges, hailing them as a remarkable blend of human and natural harmony. Speaking on his radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ he emphasized the need to safeguard this heritage and push for UNESCO World Heritage recognition for these structures.
Meghalaya, known for its scenic beauty and warm hospitality, boasts living root bridges that stand out as exceptional natural and cultural wonders in India. Unlike traditional bridges, these living structures are meticulously crafted over decades by guiding rubber tree roots across streams, evolving and strengthening over time.
PM Modi lauded these living bridges as a testament to the synergy between humanity and nature, showcasing the creativity, patience, and reverence for the environment of the Meghalayan people. He expressed pride in these bridges as a priceless national heritage and disclosed India’s application for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site status for Meghalaya’s living root bridges.
Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation in the face of climate change, the Prime Minister acknowledged the proactive role of local communities in preserving the delicate ecosystem surrounding the bridges. He mentioned the community’s efforts in maintaining over 120 living root bridges, conducting regular inspections, and establishing nurseries to enhance the ecosystem’s resilience.
PM Modi also lauded Hally War, a Padma awardee, for his five-decade dedication to conserving the living root bridges, citing him as a source of inspiration for the nation. He encouraged visitors to these bridges to share their experiences on social media, aiming to raise awareness and appreciation for Meghalaya’s distinctive natural heritage.
