Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga from Kolkata’s Red Road on Sunday. The event, themed “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” will emphasize yoga’s role in enhancing physical and mental well-being for all age groups. Around 35,000 participants are expected to join the Prime Minister in practicing the Common Yoga Protocol at the iconic Red Road venue.
Kolkata is gearing up to host one of the largest Yoga Day events in the country, with an estimated 10 lakh individuals anticipated to engage in synchronized yoga sessions at various locations across the city. Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, mentioned that more than 210 Indian Missions worldwide will organize Yoga Day programs at about 2,500 locations in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
Since the United Nations General Assembly endorsed India’s proposal to observe the International Day of Yoga in 2014, yoga has evolved into a global health and wellness movement. The annual event has garnered significant international participation over the years, underscoring the increasing global popularity of yoga and its benefits for holistic well-being.
The Ministry of Ayush’s Yoga Sangam Portal has surpassed six lakh organizational registrations, with numbers steadily rising. This milestone signifies the growing enthusiasm nationwide for the Yoga Sangam initiative, where organizations across India will conduct synchronized yoga sessions based on the Common Yoga Protocol. The overwhelming response reflects unprecedented engagement from institutions, communities, and organizations, all contributing to a collective effort to promote health, wellness, and holistic living through yoga.
