Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with the 2026 Agricola Medal, the highest recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), at a ceremony in Rome. The medal, presented by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, acknowledged Modi’s efforts in enhancing food security, agricultural development, and farmer welfare. Qu Dongyu praised Modi for his initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and improving the lives of farmers.
The FAO Director-General commended Modi for his commitment to people’s welfare through significant agricultural programs. He also recognized India’s support for FAO’s initiatives in fighting hunger, poverty, and promoting universal food security and Sustainable Development Goals. Qu Dongyu highlighted India’s agricultural transformation under Modi’s leadership, emphasizing farmer-centric and technology-driven approaches.
India’s extensive food and agriculture programs, such as financial inclusion initiatives and social safety nets covering around 800 million people during the pandemic, were also acknowledged. Qu Dongyu appreciated India’s advocacy for regenerative farming and the promotion of nutrient-rich millets globally through initiatives like the International Year of Millets in partnership with FAO. He praised India’s digital infrastructure efforts during its G20 Presidency for enhancing digital technology access and service delivery in developing nations, leading to poverty reduction.
