The Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) has provided opportunities for around 36.33 lakh people, contributing significantly to livelihoods and grassroots economic development nationwide. Administered by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), this scheme plays a crucial role in fostering entrepreneurship and job creation.
During the 15th Finance Commission cycle, PMEGP has shown strong performance, utilizing the allocated budget of Rs 13,554.42 crore to establish 4,03,706 micro-enterprises, exceeding the target. The ministry stated that this success underscores the program’s effectiveness and the sustained demand for entrepreneurship-driven initiatives.
PMEGP emphasizes inclusive growth by providing targeted assistance to women and marginalized communities. Nearly 40% of the supported micro-enterprises are led by women, with 45% of the Margin Money subsidy directed towards women entrepreneurs, promoting their participation in business ventures. Moreover, 54% of the beneficiaries come from SC/ST/OBC backgrounds, showcasing the scheme’s commitment to social inclusivity.
The majority of enterprises established under PMEGP, approximately 80%, are situated in rural areas, bolstering rural industrialization and balanced regional progress. By offering credit-linked subsidies and nurturing entrepreneurship at the grassroots level, the program significantly contributes to fostering inclusive economic development and realizing the vision of a self-reliant India.
