The proposal for a domestic airport in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur has progressed significantly with the submission of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 100 crore to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for approval and funding. This initiative aims to improve air connectivity in the Cauvery Delta region and boost economic development in central Tamil Nadu. The DPR, jointly prepared by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Tamil Nadu government, marks a crucial step towards establishing the airport.
Tiruchy International Airport Director S.S. Raju mentioned that the Tamil Nadu government has already allocated 55 acres of land for the project. The proposed airport, located at the Thanjavur Air Force Station under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, is set to accommodate three ATR aircraft initially. This development is part of efforts to enhance air travel accessibility for passengers from the Delta districts, with plans for essential infrastructure like an administrative building in the DPR.
Raju highlighted that the project’s preliminary works, including the submission of the Rs 100 crore DPR to the Civil Aviation Ministry, are underway. The infrastructure being developed will cater to domestic air travelers from the Delta region, addressing the growing demand for improved air connectivity. Additionally, ongoing infrastructure projects at Tiruchy International Airport, such as the new Air Traffic Control tower and runway expansion, are expected to further enhance operational efficiency and cargo handling capabilities.
The expansion of the airport’s runway from 8,000 feet to 12,500 feet, estimated at Rs 350 crore, aims to accommodate larger aircraft and bolster cargo operations. Once completed, this expansion will enable the operation of wide-body aircraft from Tiruchy, leading to enhanced cargo facilities and increased connectivity. The combined upgrades, including the new terminal and improved parking facilities, are set to solidify Tiruchy’s position as a key aviation hub in Tamil Nadu, extending the benefits of air connectivity to the Delta region through the Thanjavur airport project.
