People from Gujarat protested outside the Congress national headquarters due to objectionable comments made by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge. The protest stemmed from Kharge’s statement during an election campaign in Kerala where he referred to Gujaratis as “illiterate” and claimed they were being deceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This led to a gathering of protesters expressing their discontent outside the Congress office.
One protester highlighted that such remarks were disrespectful to the people of Gujarat and disregarded their contributions to the country. Another protester emphasized the significant roles played by leaders from Gujarat like Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah in the nation’s development. BJP MP Dhaval Patel strongly criticized Kharge’s statement, alleging that it had sparked widespread anger among Gujaratis, leading to the protests.
Such comments were viewed as reflecting a negative attitude towards Gujaratis and seen as a sign of political frustration by the Congress party. Meanwhile, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed concern over the declining political discourse standards, emphasizing the need to maintain decorum in language usage.
