Protests broke out at the Park Circus seven-point crossing in central Kolkata following the recent demolition of illegal structures in the Tiljala area using bulldozers. Demonstrators gathered at Park Circus, attempting to block the road. They reportedly threw bricks at police officers and damaged several police vehicles.
Several individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. The Additional Commissioner of Police (CP) of Kolkata Police, Ashesh Biswas, emphasized that none of the culprits would be let off. Central forces were deployed alongside Kolkata Police personnel at the scene.
Local residents and outsiders gathered at Park Circus to oppose the use of bulldozers for demolishing illegal constructions in Tiljala. The police mentioned that the assembly was unauthorized and that tensions rose when authorities tried to disperse the crowd and clear the road.
As the police attempted to intervene, chaos ensued when bricks were allegedly thrown at them. The authorities stated that outsiders were part of the unlawful assembly. Additional CP Ashesh Biswas highlighted that the police had taken precautions based on intelligence inputs to prevent a major escalation.
