Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met President Droupadi Murmu to request the cancellation of six AAP Rajya Sabha members’ membership after they switched to the BJP. Mann criticized the move, calling the MPs “not elected but selected” and accused them of betraying Punjab’s democratic mandate.
Mann, accompanied by Punjab MLAs, submitted a memorandum at Rashtrapati Bhavan, highlighting the BJP’s increased Rajya Sabha numbers from Punjab despite having only two MLAs in the state. He emphasized that such defections undermine democracy and challenged the MPs to resign and seek a fresh mandate.
Addressing the media, Mann condemned the defections as a “murder of democracy,” stressing the need for constitutional reforms to hold such actions accountable. He warned that the BJP’s shield would not protect the MPs in Punjab and vowed that Punjabis would not tolerate betrayal.
Demanding consequences for the MPs’ actions, Mann proposed a constitutional amendment for recall provisions to punish treachery. He accused the BJP of misusing central agencies and criticized the party for providing security to individuals under investigation.
