Punjab has integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its school curriculum from Class I to XII. The initiative, known as the ‘Sarbat.AI’ project, was launched by School Education Minister Harjot Bains alongside former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia. Punjab becomes the first state in India to introduce AI as a mainstream subject for all school levels.
The curriculum aims to equip students with skills for the future, promoting innovation, ethical AI practices, entrepreneurship, and responsible digital citizenship. By incorporating international best practices from countries like Singapore, Finland, the UAE, and the US, the curriculum ensures alignment with UNESCO’s Ethical AI Framework. This move is intended to prepare students for the evolving job market and encourage them to become creators and innovators in the technology-driven world.
Under the phased implementation plan, Phase I will introduce AI education to Classes VIII to XII by integrating it into the computer science curriculum of government and private schools. This will involve various teaching methods such as live online classes, recorded lectures, project-based learning, continuous assessments, and a dedicated learning management system. In Phase II, AI education will extend to Classes I to VII, ensuring that every child in Punjab receives age-appropriate AI education.
Former Delhi Education Minister Sisodia emphasized that Punjab’s initiative reflects a commitment to not only teach students how to use AI but also to inspire them to innovate, create, and lead in a technology-centered future.
